Introducing more new DTBird & DTBat hardware!

During July, DTBird technicians traveled to an Onshore wind farm in Germany to install a new hardware model called ALBATROSS as well as new DTBat hardware. The scope of the project is to monitor bird and bat activity and also launch shutdown actions to reduce the collision risk.

ALBATROSS was designed to withstand harsher onshore climates and offshore conditions.

The DTBat system features a new omnidirectional microphone and ultrasound detector which offers an auto bat species identification software, a highly requested feature for our potential clients. DTBat is smart curtailment at work. Why smart? It takes into account not only environmental conditions but bat activity too.

Meet DTBird & DTBat at Tarragona & Hamburg!

During September DTBird members will travel to Tarragona to attend the 16th European Bat Research Symposium (EBRS) 2024. The Conference will occur on September 2nd - 6th at the Tarragona Conference & Exhibition Centre.

The symposium is a triennial conference dedicated to the study and conservation of bats in Europe, where researchers and conservationists meet to exchange knowledge and discuss recent advances in bat science and conservation, covering a wide range of topics (e.g., ecology, behavior, physiology, genetics and habitat conservation).

From Tarragona, we will travel to exhibit at WindEnergy Hamburg set to take place at the Hamburg Messe und Congress on September 24th-27th.

If you are in town or nearby, please drop by and ask our team members all your queries about bird and bat monitoring at Wind Farms: Pricing, efficiency rates, lead times, track records, latest upgrades, and more. We look forward to making your acquaintance and working together on future projects!

Introducing new DTBird hardware model: FALCO!

Two weeks ago, our new camera hardware model FALCO was officially installed at an Onshore Wind Farm in Spain!  We had already showcased it at WindEurope this March. More FALCOs are planned to be installed this year across different locations.

Why "FALCO"? We wanted to honor one of the bird families we are protecting with our products across our installations. Some of the basic features of this new hardware model are:

  • Small & lightweight like a Falcon
  • IP67 and IK10 protection
  • Rotor-swept area and long detection

DTBird FALCO is your scalable solution for bird protection!

DTBird Annual General Company Meeting

On Friday, June 14th, we had our annual general company meeting with our employees outside our office. We prepared a series of DTBird Games with puzzles for them to solve scattered throughout the Retiro park. One lucky group won a series of handmade insect gifts from a former employee.

Afterward, they enjoyed a healthy coffee break and what followed was the meeting where Agustín Riopérez (CEO) and Javier Díaz (CTO) took to the stage. In short, they gave a summary of the current company state and future developments.

Once again, we renew our commitment and mission to bridge the wind industry with biodiversity protection!

DTBird is selected in ELBE EUROCLUSTER Financial Support to Innovation call!

Back in September, DTBird presented a project for developing & testing a bird anti-rest effect prototype to be deployed at a Floating wind farm on the southern coast of France in 2024. This project has received funding from the European Union's Joint Cluster Initiatives programme under grant agreement No 101074230. And will last for 12 months.

Stay tuned for project updates throughout 2024!

DTBird seeks Operators for DTBat system evaluation

Scientific evaluation of the DTBat® system in wind turbines with high mortality of bats.

Liquen (DTBird&DTBat) has a product, the DTBat®, with more than 40 systems installed in several countries since 2012. DTBat uses ultrasonic detectors with microphones installed in various positions, tower and/or nacelle according to the characteristics of the wind turbine and the bat species that use their environment. This makes it possible to detect the presence of bats in real time, and to trigger the wind turbine stop signal when detection thresholds are exceeded (e.g. more than 3 detections in 30 min). The stop signal is prolonged in time as long as the activity is maintained. The activity thresholds are set for each wind turbine and are adjustable.

Compared to the wind speed shutdown protocol (e.g. wind turbine stopped below 6 m/s in an hourly period) the advantages are:

-         It allows to produce electricity at times of low wind when bat activity is low or non-existent.

-         It allows to protect bat species that have activity above the established wind value and that are only partially protected by the wind speed-based protocol.

We are seeking wind farm operators with specific wind turbines that have high rates of bat mortality.

The aim is to evaluate the technical capabilities of the DTBat® to reduce the risk of collision by applying real-time wind turbine shutdown. We wish to be able to share this experience as a case-study or a scientific publication and to present the data in different scientific and business environments in the wind energy and conservation sector.

The project should also involve an environmental consultancy, NGO or administration for independent data processing and reporting. The Spanish Association for the Conservation and Research of Bats (SECEMU) is available to participate in the project.

DTBird was also at the European Vulture Conference 2023!

After closing up the Spanish Wind Energy event in Gran Canarias, Agustín Riopérez gave a brief presentation as a Speaker at the European Vulture Conference hosted by the Vulture Conservation Foundation. The Conference took place in Cáceres, Extremadura, and went from November 14th to November 17th in the San Francisco Cultural Centre.

In the session, we shared how our system works, and showed examples of effective detections and WTG shutdowns with vultures being the main protagonists. Another takeaway point was the imminent growth in WTG rotor diameter seen across Onshore wind farms and how larger turbines would lead to longer WTG stopping times to decrease the collision risk. This ultimately puts at risk vultures who tend to fly using heated air currents and are considered to be slow to react against obstacles.

DTBird participated in the II Spanish Offshore Wind Congress!

DTBird’s CEO, Agustín Riopérez was invited as a Speaker and joined other four expert panelists to discuss the environmental value of Offshore Wind Farms, in the environmental session of the congress hosted by the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE in Spanish). It took place from November 6th till November 8th in Las Palmas, in Gran Canarias, and was carried out in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.

In the session, we shared how our system works and the benefits of employing a camera-based detection system to monitor birds located near offshore wind farms. Since our systems record activity and also (potential) collisions, we provide useful datasets for Operators, Developers, Environmental Administrations, and other stakeholders.

DTBird system installation on Saitec's DemoSATH platform

Saitec Offshore Technologies’ new DemoSATH platform, a two MW floating wind turbine deployment in the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) in collaboration with RWE Offshore Wind & Kansai Electric Power (KEPCO), features a marine DTBird model V4N2D10 consisting of four daylight and two thermal cameras along with ten speakers. The platform will operate during two years, at two miles off the Basque coast, in Armintza. The project scope includes bird monitoring, collision recording and avoidance by means of sound deterrence and WTG shutdown.

Detailed engineering was performed between both companies to ensure the correct location, fixing and connection of all of the DTBird elements as the platform was onshore assembled together in different phases in the port of Bilbao, Spain over the past year.

The data gathered will provide more insights on the presence, behavior, and collision risk of the local and migratory birds.

We are grateful to Saitec for placing their trust in our system and once again work jointly in a pioneering project for the Spanish Offshore sector.
