Evaluation of the DTBird® Collision Avoidance Module presented in Wind Wildlife Research Meeting XI. Denver. Nov 29 - Dec 2, 2016

DTBird® has participate in the event with the poster "Evaluation of the Application of Warning and Discouraging Sounds Automatically Emitted from Wind Turbines on Bird Collision Risk: Case Studies in Sweden and Switzerland". This poster includes a summary of the evaluation of DTBird® Collision Avoidance Module placed in 2 wind farms, one in Switzerland and the other one in Sweden. After the evaluation took place, DTBird® upgraded those models and developed new models that are now available in the website download section.

DTBirdV8D10 and DTBatD3 models have been installed for the first time

DTBirdV8D10 model is designed for large on & offshore wind turbines, with 8 HD cameras it reaches bird detection up to a distance of 600 m and 360º around the WTG. In addition, Collision Avoidance module D10 entails 10 Speakers at 2 heights that assures proper sound distribution in the entire rotor swept area.

The DTBatD3 model includes 3 bat detectors distributed along the tower of the wind turbine at the height of the rotor swept area. This unique model, together with the bat Stop Control module assures proper bat protection at large wind turbines.

These DTBird® and DTBat® models have been installed in a 140 m height and 112 m diameter wind turbine in Austria.

DTBird participates in EU Life Project
DTBird® was selected to participate in the project due to its unique features and data transparency. The project LIFE12 BIO/GR/000554 is a product of the collaboration between The Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES) and the environmental consulting company Nature Conservation Consultants (NCC), with the contribution of EU's financial instrument LIFE+. DTBird® has been installed at the Wind Farm and the Park of Energy Awareness (PENA) of CRES at Keratea (Greece), where it will be operating for 3 years.

Nine new DTBird units have been installed in France and Greece

These DTBird units operate with connection to Scada. The Wind Turbine manufacturers are Gamesa Eólica, Vestas and NegMicon. The following upgrades are included:

  • Size of the image that is analyzed in real-time is 256% larger (in other words 2.56 larger)
  • 31% wider lens angle that increases overlapping detection areas.
  • Higher light sensitivity

New Specifications

On March 2009, DTBird® System was installed on a wind turbine at a Molinos del Ebro wind farm (Spain), and at the beginning of 2010 the first unit was sold and installed on a wind turbine at an Acciona wind farm (Spain). DTBird® System has evolved a lot since then and has been installed in 10 countries. Take a look at its current features!

DTBird® has released the results of an independent study evaluating the detection capabilities of its latest bird monitoring models (F4, A4, F6, A6, and T). The assessment, conducted by the company, used a controlled field methodology to objectively measure maximum and effective detection distances for each model, providing wind farm operators and environmental managers with transparent, verifiable performance data. The evaluation involved controlled flights with a 1.42-meter wingspan avian-mimic drone, which simulated a medium-sized bird of prey. Flights were performed under stable weather conditions, covering a wide range of distances, angles, and trajectories. The drone’s GPS positions were synchronized with…
