DTBird Annual General Company Meeting

On Friday, June 14th, we had our annual general company meeting with our employees outside our office. We prepared a series of DTBird Games with puzzles for them to solve scattered throughout the Retiro park. One lucky group won a series of handmade insect gifts from a former employee.

Afterward, they enjoyed a healthy coffee break and what followed was the meeting where Agustín Riopérez (CEO) and Javier Díaz (CTO) took to the stage. In short, they gave a summary of the current company state and future developments.

Once again, we renew our commitment and mission to bridge the wind industry with biodiversity protection!

DTBird seeks Operators for DTBat system evaluation

Scientific evaluation of the DTBat® system in wind turbines with high mortality of bats.

Liquen (DTBird&DTBat) has a product, the DTBat®, with more than 40 systems installed in several countries since 2012. DTBat uses ultrasonic detectors with microphones installed in various positions, tower and/or nacelle according to the characteristics of the wind turbine and the bat species that use their environment. This makes it possible to detect the presence of bats in real time, and to trigger the wind turbine stop signal when detection thresholds are exceeded (e.g. more than 3 detections in 30 min). The stop signal is prolonged in time as long as the activity is maintained. The activity thresholds are set for each wind turbine and are adjustable.

Compared to the wind speed shutdown protocol (e.g. wind turbine stopped below 6 m/s in an hourly period) the advantages are:

-         It allows to produce electricity at times of low wind when bat activity is low or non-existent.

-         It allows to protect bat species that have activity above the established wind value and that are only partially protected by the wind speed-based protocol.

We are seeking wind farm operators with specific wind turbines that have high rates of bat mortality.

The aim is to evaluate the technical capabilities of the DTBat® to reduce the risk of collision by applying real-time wind turbine shutdown. We wish to be able to share this experience as a case-study or a scientific publication and to present the data in different scientific and business environments in the wind energy and conservation sector.

The project should also involve an environmental consultancy, NGO or administration for independent data processing and reporting. The Spanish Association for the Conservation and Research of Bats (SECEMU) is available to participate in the project.

DTBird was also at the European Vulture Conference 2023!

After closing up the Spanish Wind Energy event in Gran Canarias, Agustín Riopérez gave a brief presentation as a Speaker at the European Vulture Conference hosted by the Vulture Conservation Foundation. The Conference took place in Cáceres, Extremadura, and went from November 14th to November 17th in the San Francisco Cultural Centre.

In the session, we shared how our system works, and showed examples of effective detections and WTG shutdowns with vultures being the main protagonists. Another takeaway point was the imminent growth in WTG rotor diameter seen across Onshore wind farms and how larger turbines would lead to longer WTG stopping times to decrease the collision risk. This ultimately puts at risk vultures who tend to fly using heated air currents and are considered to be slow to react against obstacles.

Automatic Bat Monitoring & Protection
DTBat® is a self-working System that detects bat presence in real-time, and takes automatic actions linked to bat detection.
Remarkable applications of DTBat® System are:
  • Autonomous Bat Monitoring.
  • Bat Mortality Reduction through automatic actions.
DTBat® Clients have access to the DTBat® System recordings through an online Software Application named DTBat® Data Analysis Platform (DAP).

BatAbout2
DTBat® Detection Module
DTBat® Detection Module surveys the airspace with Bat recorders, detecting and recording bat passes in real-time. Installation design and operational settings are customized for any Target Species and WTG dimensions.
DTBat® Detection Module is equipped with 1 to 3 Bat recorders installed at height on the WTG tower and/or on the nacelle. Recorders are placed in specific locations to achieve the best surveillance of the moving blades area.
DTBat® Stop Control Module
DTBat® Stop Control Module automatically Stops and restarts WTG according to bat activity detected in real-time and/or environmental variables.
Stop trigger and Stop duration criteria are adjustable to target Species or to cover a % of the total bat activity detected (e.g WTG stopped for 95% of the bat activity detected).
